The most common variety of Tourmaline is black schorl first described by Mathesius in 1524. It may account for 95% or more of all tourmaline in nature.

Black tourmaline is a powerful protective and grounding stone that absorbs negative energy, shields against psychic attacks, and promotes emotional balance and self-confidence.

Protective and Cleansing Properties
Black tourmaline, also known as Schorl, is widely regarded as a stone of protection. It acts as a psychic shield, deflecting and dispelling negative energies, harmful entities, and environmental pollutants, including electromagnetic radiation. Its ability to absorb negativity allows it to cleanse both the wearer and their surroundings, making it a versatile tool for maintaining energetic balance. Many practitioners use it in homes, workplaces, or near electronic devices to neutralize harmful energies.

Grounding and Emotional Benefits
This crystal is highly grounding, connecting the human spirit to the Earth and aligning the body’s energy centre's. It is associated with the root chakra, which governs feelings of security and stability, helping individuals feel more confident, self-assured, and empowered. Black tourmaline is also believed to relieve stress, anxiety, and unwanted thoughts, promoting a sense of calm and emotional resilience.

Historical and Cultural Significance
Historically, black tourmaline has been used by ancient magicians and shamans for protection against demonic spirits and negative forces during rituals. Its name, Schorl, originates from a town in Saxony, Germany, where it was first discovered in the 1400s. The stone’s popularity as a gemstone grew in the late 1800s, particularly after Tiffany & Co. introduced it to the jewellery market.

Unique Physical and Energetic Properties
Black tourmaline is known for its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties, meaning it can become electrically charged when heated or rubbed, which historically allowed it to attract dust and particles. This property is also symbolically linked to its ability to attract and neutralize negative energies. Its deep black colour represents the combination of all colours, symbolizing strength, protection, and purification.

Practical Uses
To harness its energy, black tourmaline can be worn as jewellery, carried as a pocket stone, or placed in living and workspaces. It is often combined with clear quartz in “tourmalinated quartz” to balance light and dark energies, enhancing its protective and cleansing effects. Regularly cleansing the stone, such as by smudging or placing it in sunlight, helps maintain its energetic potency.

In summary, black tourmaline is a multi-purpose crystal valued for its protective, grounding, and purifying qualities, making it a staple in spiritual practices, energy healing, and personal empowerment.
